What are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are common benign growths of muscle tissue in and around the uterine wall of a woman. In fact, by age 50, up to 70–90% of women will develop at least one fibroid tumor. These tumors are almost always benign, or non-cancerous, as cancerous fibroids occur in less than one in 1,000 cases. Fibroids primarily develop and grow during a woman’s childbearing years. They can range greatly in size — from as small as a pea to as large as a grapefruit. In most cases, fibroid growth stops when a woman reaches menopause.
What are the Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids?

- A firm mass felt in the middle of your pelvic region
- Heavy, prolonged periods
- Painful periods
- Abnormal bleeding
- Pain in the lower back
- Pelvic pain
- Having to frequently urinate
- Infertility, Multiple miscarriages, or early labor
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Enlargement of your lower abdomen
What are the Causes and Risks of Fibroids?
The exact cause of fibroids isn’t known, but risk factors may include:
- African American Ethnicity
- Having a family history of fibroids
- Being in your 30s and 40s
- Hormonal changes
- Changes in Genetics
- Variations in insulin-like growth factor
- Being overweight

How are Fibroids Treated?
Dr. Jain finds fibroids during routine physical exams and uses ultrasound, other imaging tests, or lab tests for confirmation. She will work with you to come up with a treatment plan you’re comfortable with, which might include:
Watchful waiting – If you have mild fibroid symptoms or none at all, Dr. Jain may wait and watch the fibroids to see if symptoms worsen over time.
Medications – Certain medications, including hormonal medications, are used to relieve symptoms of fibroids, such as pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. Some hormone medications help shrink fibroids.
Noninvasive ultrasound treatment – MRI-guided ultrasound treatment destroys fibroids without the need for incisions. Ultrasound therapy is a simple outpatient procedure.
Minimally invasive surgical procedures – Depending on the severity of your fibroids and symptoms, Dr. Jain may recommend a minimally invasive treatment, such as laparoscopic or robotic procedures to destroy fibroids or endometrial ablation. For more severe cases of fibroids or for women finished having children, Dr. Jain may recommend a myomectomy, which is a minimally invasive abdominal surgery to remove fibroids. She may also suggest a hysterectomy to remove your uterus where the fibroids are located. Dr. Jain has performed thousands of robotic surgery procedures over the course of her career.
Which Fibroid Treatment is Right for You?
Dr. Jain, and her team review your medical history, symptoms, and the severity of your fibroids to come up with the most appropriate treatment plan. As a gynecologic surgery expert, she provides the most advanced treatment options for fibroids and other gynecologic conditions.
